THE CLIENT: Airbus stands at the forefront of the global aerospace industry, renowned for designing, manufacturing, and delivering an extensive portfolio of commercial aircraft, rotorcraft, defence platforms, and space systems.
THE PROJECT: Airbus Skyways was a pioneering R&D initiative, deploying autonomous, drone-based logistics technology to transport parcels and critical maritime supplies between automated waypoints and directly to vessels at sea.
SCOPE OF WORK: To engineer and manufacture highly accurate, glass-reinforced plastic (GRP) enclosures to safeguard the Airbus Deck Finder navigation system in all operational environments.
INTRODUCTION IN BRIEF
The client, Airbus, and their wider project team approached Hayward GRP to support their experimental Skyways venture, an advanced drone-based delivery system aimed at delivering small, time-critical packages in urban and maritime environments. A critical part of the project is the Deck Finder positioning system which allows for safe take-offs and landings in the harshest environmental conditions.
Our remit: To develop and manufacture a durable GRP enclosure that could provide environmental sealing, impact resistance, and complete protection for the Deck Finder units.
OUR SOLUTION AND OBJECTIVES
Following detailed consultations with the client’s engineering team and a thorough review of the technical design, Hayward GRP proposed a complete manufacturing solution. This included engineering support, CAD, and independent calculations to ensure design durability and operational confidence.
On receiving client approval, our engineering team manufactured precision tooling, specialist jigs, and thirty-six dimensionally accurate GRP enclosures, each undergoing comprehensive fit and function evaluation prior to deployment and operational trials.
THE RESULT IN CONCLUSION
The GRP enclosures produced for the Skyways project demonstrate Hayward GRP’s capability to deliver precision-engineered solutions that meet the stringent dimensional, mechanical, and environmental requirements of the project. Working in full collaboration with the client, we supplied mission-ready enclosures engineered for operational reliability over an extended service life.
