THE CLIENT: Avtrade is a globally recognised leader in the supply of aircraft components and integrated support services, serving the commercial aviation aftermarket with precision-engineered, tailor-made solutions. Their portfolio encompasses component trading and leasing, including advanced MRO (Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul) capabilities.
THE PROJECT: To conceive, engineer, and manufacture a 3.2-metre diameter GRP globe as a centrepiece water feature, incorporating all internal structural elements and plumbing for the water-delivery system.
SCOPE OF WORK: Full development and manufacture of the 3.2-metre engineered GRP globe and its structural support plinth, designed to withstand continuous operation in an exterior water feature environment.
INTRODUCTION IN BRIEF
The client, Avtrade, required a GRP specialist with expertise in the design and manufacture of large-scale, precision-engineered, composite structures. The commission called for the creation of a 3.2-metre globe and supporting plinth to form the centrepiece of a major exterior water feature at the company’s world headquarters in West Sussex.
A critical requirement was absolute fidelity to the Avtrade corporate logo, translating its design into an exact, three-dimensional GRP form capable of delivering a commanding visual presence and exceptional brand impact.
The installation deadline was immovable: the globe was to be unveiled as part of Avtrade’s landmark 40th Anniversary celebrations.
OUR SOLUTION AND OBJECTIVES
Following award of the contract, Hayward GRP undertook a comprehensive site survey, enabling the development of a fully integrated design-and-build proposal. this included CAD design, structural calculations, and complete end-to-end support for the project
Upon client approval, our team produced precision CNC-milled master patterns and production tooling, followed by the 3.2-metre GRP globe and its engineered support plinth. The assembly underwent a full factory test build to verify dimensional accuracy, structural integrity, and flawless integration of the concealed internal support structure and water-delivery system.
A custom-engineered cradle was fabricated to transport the globe from our facility to the specialist painters and ultimately to Avtrade’s headquarters for final installation.
THE RESULT IN CONCLUSION
This project represented a landmark achievement for the Hayward GRP team, with our involvement spanning every stage from initial survey through to installation. The result is a precision-engineered GRP globe of exceptional quality, surpassing the client’s exacting expectations.
Completed on schedule, the feature took pride of place at the main entrance to Avtrade’s headquarters in time for their 40th Anniversary, delivering a powerful visual statement and an enduring symbol of the brand’s global reach.
