THE CLIENT: The Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI) is an esteemed independent research and consultancy organisation specialising in geotechnical, geological, and geophysical engineering sciences.
THE APPLICATION: A cutting-edge airborne probe engineered to measure sea ice thickness with exceptional accuracy and definition, MAiSIE is designed for aerial deployment via helicopter or fixed-wing aircraft.
SCOPE OF WORK: To manufacture and deliver a 3.5-metre fuselage constructed to precise technical specifications, including all associated precision GRP mouldings.
INTRODUCTION IN BRIEF
The client: NGI sought a highly specialised partner with advanced GRP design and manufacturing capabilities to realise their airborne sensor platform, MAiSIE (Multi-frequency Airborne Sea Ice Explorer). The platform, designed to map sea ice thickness with unmatched accuracy and detail whilst being towed behind either a helicopter or a fixed wing aircraft, required comprehensive fabrication of the fuselage, nose cone, tail cone, towing band, access panels, and modular tail sail.
OUR SOLUTION AND OBJECTIVES
Following detailed consultations with NGI’s design engineers and a thorough review of the technical drawings, Hayward GRP proposed a complete manufacturing solution. This included detailed engineering support, incorporating independent calculations and FEA analysis to ensure design durability and performance confidence.
With client approval secured, our team produced precision CNC milled master patterns and production tooling. A complete set of GRP mouldings was then produced, incorporating a precise sub-assembly of the components to complete the fit-out as part of the prototype build, ready for formal FAIR assessment and client review.
THE RESULT IN CONCLUSION
MAiSIE was expertly crafted using resin-infused multi-axial fabrics and a high-performance vinyl-ester resin system, ensuring tight dimensional tolerances critical for both internal component fit and external aerodynamic geometry. Affectionately dubbed the “Ice-Bird,” the final platform was met with high praise by NGI and is currently operational over the Antarctic territory.
