THE CLIENT: Interserve Construction is a leading UK-based contractor, delivering complex and high-profile construction, infrastructure, engineering, and interior fit-out projects across industry sectors.
THE LOCATION: McEwan Hall, located in the heart of Edinburgh, serves as the iconic graduation venue for the University of Edinburgh. Designed by the eminent Victorian architect Sir Robert Rowand Anderson, the Hall is a celebrated example of civic architecture and academic heritage.
SCOPE OF WORK: Hayward GRP was contracted to design, manufacture, and install a bespoke modular GRP roof turret. This architectural element was to crown the central ventilation shaft of the newly constructed, free-standing Pavilion entrance. The brief also encompassed a suite of additional GRP mouldings, trims, and louvres to elegantly frame the external perimeter of the lift shaft.
INTRODUCTION IN BRIEF
The client: Interserve Construction sought a specialist GRP partner with the technical expertise and design acumen to bring their vision for the Pavilion entrance at McEwan Hall to life. The project demanded more than just a manufacturing service, it required an end-to-end GRP moulding solution, encompassing precision design, aesthetic harmony, and faultless installation.
Hayward GRP was selected for our ability to deliver on all fronts, producing a fully integrated architectural GRP package tailored specifically to the project’s complex technical and visual demands.
OUR SOLUTION AND OBJECTIVES
Following our appointment, we undertook a detailed site survey to inform a fully engineered project proposal. This foundational stage included design collaboration, workshop drawings, and the provision of structural and load-bearing verification through comprehensive engineering calculations and finite element analysis (FEA).
Upon receiving final approval, we designed and manufactured precision master patterns and production tooling. We then fabricated the GRP turret roof panels, as well as the accompanying mouldings and louvres, each component expertly colour-matched to integrate seamlessly with the existing steelwork and architectural palette.
To complete the package, we managed all aspects of delivery to site, including the provision of RAMS documentation, ensuring safe and efficient installation by our trained field teams.
THE RESULT IN CONCLUSION
The outcome is a refined, structurally integrated roof turret that enhances the Pavilion’s presence while respecting the heritage context of McEwan Hall. The associated GRP mouldings, trims, and louvres were fabricated to the highest specification and installed with exceptional attention to detail.
