SCOPE OF WORK: To develop a certified repair methodology for Class-1 and phenolic construction, and to carry out a full structural and cosmetic restoration in line with stringent engineering and industry standards.
INTRODUCTION IN BRIEF
The client, Network Rail, engaged Hayward GRP for our deep technical expertise in composite and GRP repair. The brief required us to develop an approved structural repair procedure to rectify crash-related damage sustained by Class-1 and phenolic laminates, one that would meet the rigorous standards demanded by Bombardier’s engineering teams.
OUR SOLUTION AND OBJECTIVES
After collaborating with the engineers at Network Rail and Bombardier, we developed a comprehensive repair strategy to address collision-related damage to Class-1 and phenolic composite structures.
Upon approval of our methodology, we carried out a full structural and cosmetic repair to a train with collision damage to validate our repair procedures under operational conditions.
The success of this pilot repair led to our process being formally adopted by the client and is now recognised across the rail industry as a benchmark solution for the restoration of Class 1/0 and phenolic laminates.
THE RESULT IN CONCLUSION
This collaborative process with colleagues at Network Rail and Bombardier culminated in the successful development of a certified procedure for the structural and cosmetic repair of collision-damaged rolling stock. Our specialist team implemented the approved process with precision, delivering a faultless result that surpassed client expectations.
