THE CLIENT: ‘Three UK’ is one of the UK’s largest and most forward-thinking mobile network providers. Headquartered in Reading and operating under the Three UK brand, it is a wholly owned subsidiary of CK Hutchison Holdings. The company delivers nationwide 3G, 4G, and 5G services via its own advanced network infrastructure, providing seamless connectivity to millions of customers across the country.
THE REQUIREMENT: To provide GRP lampshades for installation in selected stores across Three’s UK retail network, which includes around 300 locations nationwide.
SCOPE OF WORK: To design, engineer, and manufacture bespoke GRP lampshades for deployment across Three Mobile’s nationwide retail estate.
INTRODUCTION IN BRIEF
The client: Three UK, engaged Hayward GRP to redesign and develop their lampshades for roll out across its UK retail estate, The project called for the development of two distinct lampshade systems: full-scale “Bell” lampshades, specifically engineered for high-ceiling environments, and refined “Shallow Pendant” variants, designed to accommodate locations with lower ceiling profiles.
The solution demanded a Class 1 fire-retardant construction to meet regulatory compliance, paired with an immaculate satin exterior finish aligned to the brand’s design aesthetic. Further considerations included a robust internal structure to accommodate the lighting components and opal diffuser, alongside a precision-engineered packaging solution to safeguard the product during transit and installation.
OUR SOLUTION AND OBJECTIVES
Following the award of the project, Hayward GRP collaborated closely with Three UK’s design team and installation contractors to gain a comprehensive understanding of the project’s technical and aesthetic requirements. This consultative process enabled us to develop a detailed proposal, incorporating revised design concepts supported by precision CAD drawings and photorealistic renderings to ensure clarity and client confidence.
On securing client approval, our technical team manufactured CNC-milled master patterns and bespoke production tooling. We then developed prototypes for both lampshade formats, rigorously evaluating each for fit, function, and finish to ensure they met the exacting specifications. The prototypes exceeded expectations in both form and function, allowing us to proceed seamlessly into full-scale production and nationwide distribution.

This project was an exciting collaboration between Hayward GRP and Three. From the initial brief through to final delivery, our team worked seamlessly with Three to develop the redesign the GRP lampshades for deployment across the nationwide store network. Every aspect of the manufacturing and installation process was meticulously refined in partnership with the client to ensure seamless integration and flawless execution.
Together, we successfully delivered over 1,100 units across both design variants, meeting exacting standards for compliance, finish, and functionality. The final products not only fulfilled the technical specification but also elevated the in-store environment, an achievement reflected in the positive feedback received from both Three’s design team and the installation contractors.
