THE PROJECT: Hayward GRP was commissioned to design and manufacture a series of highly specialised GRP Tetrode hoods. These precision-engineered components serve a critical function, safely encapsulating high-voltage energy systems while containing and isolating specialist insulating gases within a controlled environment.
SCOPE OF WORK: Our brief was to develop and deliver a bespoke GRP solution that could meet the extreme performance demands of the UKAEA site environment.
INTRODUCTION IN BRIEF
The client: The UK Atomic Energy Authority engaged Hayward GRP to support a critical infrastructure upgrade involving the fabrication of Tetrode hoods designed for long-term integration into one of its operational fusion environments. The performance expectations were rigorous; each hood would be required to operate reliably under sustained high voltage, pressure, and gas exposure.
Meeting these technical demands necessitated the formulation of a highly specialised material specification, developed in accordance with UKAEA’s stringent nuclear-grade safety and compliance standards.
OUR SOLUTION AND OBJECTIVES
Prior to manufacture, we worked collaboratively with the UKAEA’s engineering team and our materials supply partners to identify the optimal resin system and reinforcement matrix capable of withstanding continuous exposure to high-voltage electrical loads, elevated pressure conditions, and active insulating gases.
Once the technical specification was approved, we manufactured precision tooling and specialist jigs to produce a series of dimensionally accurate GRP Tetrode hoods. Each hood underwent a multi-phase evaluation and environmental testing process. All components met or exceeded UKAEA’s performance and compliance thresholds and are now successfully deployed on site.
THE RESULT IN CONCLUSION
This technically demanding commission showcased Hayward GRP’s capabilities in delivering engineered composite solutions to exacting scientific standards. Working in close partnership with the UKAEA engineering team, we were tasked with producing high-precision, performance-validated Tetrode hoods designed for long-term operational stability within complex energy infrastructure.
