THE CLIENT: Calco Construction provides a comprehensive suite of professional construction services, encompassing full design-and-build capabilities for domestic new builds, period property refurbishments, structural renovations, and sensitive heritage restorations.
PROJECT LOCATION: Wessex House is a Grade II listed building located at 22 Oxford Road, Newbury, the significant historic building blends Regency elegance with modern internal refinements.
SCOPE OF WORK: To design, manufacture, and install a bespoke Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) cornice replicating the original stone profile with absolute precision. The specification required exact dimensional fidelity to the original architectural detail, enhanced by the performance benefits of modern composite engineering.
INTRODUCTION IN BRIEF
The client: Calco Construction commissioned Hayward GRP to deliver a specialist solution for a critical restoration element of Wessex House: the replacement of a deteriorating stone cornice. The original masonry, due to its considerable weight, had begun to fracture and detach from the building, creating both safety risks and preservation concerns.
The replacement demanded a lightweight GRP alternative capable of withstanding environmental exposure, meeting heritage planning approvals, and maintaining the exact visual character of the original Regency moulding.
OUR SOLUTION AND OBJECTIVES
Hayward GRP attended site to carry out a complete site survey, this allowed our team to take templates from the existing cornice to ensure exact dimensional accuracy of the section. From these measurements, we produced detailed CAD drawings, structural load assessments, and a detailed installation methodology including RAMS documentation to ensure a safe and compliant installation.
Upon sign off, our team created a master pattern, Production Mould, and forty linear metres of engineered GRP cornice. The cornice was then pre-cut, mitred, and finished in our workshop to ensure seamless junctions and accurate alignment upon installation.
The cornice was then delivered to site where our site team carried out a full site installation, ensuring a smooth and efficient completion to the project.
THE RESULT IN CONCLUSION
The completed GRP cornice integrates so convincingly with the façade of Wessex House that it is indistinguishable from the original Regency stonework. The result safeguards the architectural integrity of this Grade II listed landmark while enhancing its resilience to environmental wear.
