THE CLIENT: Avalon Building Contractors Ltd, based in London, specialises in high‑end interior architecture, structural renovations, complex conversions, and bespoke extensions, combining rigorous project controls with premium craftsmanship.
THE PROJECT LOCATION: Wild House was developed by Nuno Miguel Viegas, a Senior Designer and Project Lead. Formerly a single-family home, Nuno obtained Planning Permission to add two additional storeys and a rear extension to the property.
SCOPE OF WORK: Engineer and fabricate a permanent architectural sign in GRP, designed to integrate seamlessly into the façade of the building. The specification emphasised dimensional stability, exterior durability, and full compatibility with cementitious render systems to create a refined inlaid typographic effect.
INTRODUCTION IN BRIEF
The client, Avalon, sought a specialist GRP partner capable of delivering a custom‑engineered signage solution: a permanent sign recessed into the primary elevation, designed to be rendered over to achieve the illusion of inlaid, relief lettering.
To meet the brief, the sign would require a robust construction to allow for a permanent connection to the building façade. Another critical requirement was the exterior coating on the sign; it would need to allow the render to achieve a perfect long-term bond to the GRP substrate.
OUR SOLUTION AND OBJECTIVES
Hayward GRP met with the project’s senior designer to understand the requirements and objectives of the project; this allowed our team to present a project proposal that included drawings, CAD models, and construction samples for client review.
Following approval, our team CNC milled a precision master pattern, produced a production mould, and created the Wild House sign. The sign incorporated a defined rendering lip around each of the letters to ensure the formation and control of crisp edges.
Once the sign was released from the mould, the surface was then prepared, and our proprietary rough-coat system was applied to ensure the perfect substrate for the render to bond to.
THE RESULT IN CONCLUSION
The Wild House commission was a very straightforward project for the Hayward GRP team; working in collaboration with the project’s lead designer, our team developed a façade‑integrated sign solution which aligns precisely with the architectural language of the building and the designer’s vision.
