THE CLIENT: The Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) in London is globally recognised as the preeminent institution for the applied and decorative arts and design. Founded in 1852 and named in honour of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, it houses an unparalleled collection spanning centuries of creativity and craftsmanship.
THE LOCATION: Gallery 40 presents the V&A’s renowned fashion collections and hosts temporary exhibitions on its mezzanine level. This exceptional space is crowned by one of the largest and most architecturally striking domed ceilings within the museum.
SCOPE OF WORK: To design, engineer, manufacture, and install three precision-engineered, modular GRP lighting rings to integrate seamlessly into the Gallery 40 environment.
INTRODUCTION IN BRIEF
The client, V&A, sought a specialist GRP moulding contractor with advanced engineering capabilities to collaborate with their architectural design team. The brief was to develop and produce three substantial nine-metre diameter lighting rings, suspended from the iconic domed ceiling of Gallery 40. These bespoke GRP structures would serve not only as architectural features but also as versatile platforms supporting a range of adaptable lighting configurations to illuminate the exhibitions below.
OUR SOLUTION AND OBJECTIVES
Having secured the contract, Hayward GRP delivered a comprehensive design solution and detailed technical proposal that addressed both the aesthetic and structural complexities of the project. Our scope included collaborative design development, advanced engineering calculations, finite element analysis (FEA), and the creation of adaptable tooling capable of producing highly engineered GRP components.
Following client approval, our team manufactured precision CNC-machined master patterns and production tooling followed by three meticulously engineered nine-metre diameter lighting rings, crafted to exacting tolerances to ensure dimensional stability with minimal deflection. Each ring was fabricated, delivered, and installed with precision, aligning perfectly with the architectural vision for Gallery 40.
